Hiring a Sober friend for a wine tasting event

Filed under: alcohol-free, Lenten journey — nyehall @ 10:49 am

I love wine tasting events…I love the opportunity to try a variety of wines, eat cheese and laugh with my friends. And did I mention that I love the wine? So this would be my first true test for Lent, attending my monthly wine tasting event and not try the wine! Unrealistic, you say….No way…I just hired  a sober friend like a celebutante, like Rod did for Sean, like Sharon did for Ozzy, like….well you get the picture.

Fortunately, my pregnant girlfriend volunteered and we went. I felt great! I ordered tea! And defended my non-tasting position. I felt supportive of lil’ Audrey, the baby to come, and my new healhy lifestyle (if only one week in). And then…Charlene said, “You know, you won’t be able to drink at the next wine tasting either.” Oh my god, I thought. That’s true….40 days is over a month and at the time I still had 33 days to go. I looked around, made eye contact with my sober friend and her belly. And decided well 33 days is still much shorter than the 3 1/2 months until lil’ Audrey arrives. ~I can do it!

So if you have to give up something…alcohol, smoking, sugar…I recommend a sober friend. Not Ryan though…he is not supportive of this journey at all!! Every phone conversations starts with…”I’m drinking___and it’s fantastic! “

  1. You’re so sweet to mention my baby to be in your blog as someone lending you support! I’m happy to be your sober friend any time before June 14. After that, all bets are off for both of us.

  2. I’m so proud of you, Monique! Keep it up and to heck with what Ryan says!

  3. Thank you for your support sober-friend! I’m hoping lil’ A will learn to pour and shake salt at an early age. Just think, in a little over sixteen years, she can become a designated driver.

And Ryan….this wine club is not a dictatorship! You just can’t decide to kick me out of the club. You need to poll the readership. And Ryan…your liver could probably use a break too. I can hear it crying all the way up here in the north! (monique)

  4. Ha! I’ll keep that in mind for future posts, Ryan.

  5. Monique, I am so proud of you by sticking to your beliefs and not giving in to the peer pressure of the 60+ crowd. Jesus loves you. Wow, I didn’t realize St. Patricks’ was in between lent and all. You should have a camera crew following you to create your own episode of Sober House in the Tower District. Call me when it’s over!

  6. I love your idea! Sober house in the Tower district could be a great hit! We could take the show a step further and include the 80+ crowd with their pill popping/cocktail hours!

Thanks for your support and Jesus loves you too! And is watching you. ~m
